Indonesia’s sovereign state is relaxing traditional limitations on freedoms such as religion or transgender identity.

National identification will open up to trans citizens and minority religious groups, improving inclusion of everyone in society for formal identification. Under the introduction of greater freedoms, smaller religious groups will be allowed to change their religious identity on their ID card.

The central government, which rules as the supreme authority in Indonesia, has recognised a 7th religious group, Kepercayaan, for the rollout of ID across the country. This indicates a different state of play with the issuance of IDs. Throughout the course of a person’s life, their identity may change in terms of religious beliefs, gender or sexual orientation. Indonesia will make it easier for citizens to change their identity on their ID card.

Trans citizens will have access to voting in national and local elections from 14 February, joining 95% of the population that hold a digital and physical KPT card.
