A state-sponsored digital ID programme and trust framework in Honduras based on W3C Verifiable Credentials will be poised to scale to the entire digital population, the government announced.
Digital identity is the foundation of the country’s digital strategy and will be anchored by the biometric databases of the National Registry and the Immigration Authority already developed to preserve the protection of identity data belonging to citizens.
The rollout was announced by the government on November 26th. The national blueprint for digital services encompassing identity services is being sought in Honduras to establish security, inclusion, and interoperability. Following this launch, citizens will have access to various identity credentials through biometric authentication to the Bien wallet such as the National ID, Foreign Resident ID permit, Driving Permit, and Firearms Permit.
The system is powered by TECH5’s standards-based DPI platform, T5-OmniTrust, that adheres to SSI principles to establish trust between ecosystem participants and provides end-to-end wallet infrastructure to enable immediate use cases, in terms of e-KYC and onboarding, and credential issuance. KeyShare and the NFID foundation verifiable registries provide decentralised trust.
T5-AirSnap contactless face and fingerprint capture and T5-OmniMatch technologies are used for onboarding and verification. Offline-verifiable credentials via T5-Cryptograph enable secure storage and selective disclosure of citizens’ data, extending reliability to low-connectivity settings, which is crucial for inclusion. RNP and INM biometric systems are used as the program’s trust anchors and underpin the issuance quality and downstream authentication.
Gerardo Pacheco, CEO at International Technology Group, says “The implementation of this project that improves the Republic of Honduras’ journey towards digital transformation, goes along with one of the main values of our company: Innovation”.
“We are proud to be working with Tech5 and its world-leading biometric technologies to establish a true DPI program that the rest of the region will want to emulate.”
TECH5 commented: “We are delighted to see this innovation-driven National-level project happening”.
