A variety of jobs can make it harder to access or buy physical security keys to authenticate into Google’s Advanced Protection Programme.
Not excluding any profession, Google has rolled out a new passkey option to secure APP accounts in addition to the traditional security key, which for example could assist journalists in warzones and human rights workers.
The Advanced Protection Programme offers Google’s highest tier of account security, providing extra safeguarding against the common threats – phishing, malware and fraudulent access.
It is also a programme eligible for “high-risk” users, in particular professionals whose jobs make it more difficult to access Google’s security features. The calibre of “high-risk” users could also include public office officials, political campaign staff, or elected candidates or charity workers put in critical warzones.
Traditionally, users needed a physical security key for APP until now when Google has made passkeys to secure their account more readily available in their services.
Passkeys are 50% faster to use at sign-in. Passkeys are based on FIDO Authentication.
Google announced launching a new partnership with Internews to provide this security support for journalists and human rights workers through Internews’ global security partner network, spanning 10 countries and distributing more than 200,000 free security keys worldwide.
