Peter Schmeichel, the former Manchester United and Denmark goalkeeper is fronting a campaign encouraging shoppers to adopt Click to Pay, a payment method that replaces passwords and long card numbers with passkeys, biometrics, and trusted devices.

The campaign comes amid findings that European consumers are embracing digital payments more than ever. In Germany, for example, 89% of shoppers are comfortable using modern payment methods, with 57% favouring digital wallets, the highest rate in Europe.

Meanwhile, Swedes are leading in online spending, conducting 29% of their purchases online, well above the European average of 21%. Poland and Czechia are Europe’s most security-conscious markets, with 80% of shoppers using biometrics or one-time passcodes.

With Click to Pay, shoppers no longer need to type out their 16-digit card numbers at participating retailers. Instead, transactions are represented by secure digital tokens, which are meaningless if stolen, and payments can be authorised using one-time passcodes, passkeys, or biometrics.

“The future of payments should feel more like a tap‑in, not an overhead kick,” said Schmeichel. “Click to Pay means no more fumbling for cards or mistyping numbers — just a smooth, secure way to buy online.”

Brice van de Walle, Executive Vice President, Core Payments at Mastercard Europe, said: “Consumers across Europe are moving beyond passwords and card numbers toward faster, more intuitive, and secure ways to pay. This is a glimpse of the future: a seamless digital payments experience where trust is built right into checkout.”
