The European Commission has announced funding to support certification and large-scale deployment of European Digital Identity Wallets across the continent.
A total of €15 million has been earmarked, with €10 million dedicated to supporting the development and official certification of EUDI Wallet solutions, and €5 million set aside for projects that issue and accept mobile driving licenses through the Wallet.
This investment will help Member States prepare for the upcoming eIDAS 2.0 deadline, however, it is also a clear signal that they must be ready to issue certified wallets by the end of 2026.
The announcement pushes urgency that member states must “finalise integration plans” now, says Lissi GmbH. It also provides a grant of up to 50% co-funding to “lower the initial cost and risk of projects”.
Proposals for the funding program are due by December 9, 2025, giving member states and stakeholders a defined window to secure support.
Identity Week Europe 2026 offers a timely forum to explore how these certified wallets will transform identity verification, privacy, and cross-border services. Policymakers, technology providers, and financial institutions will gather to discuss best practices, regulatory alignment, and practical deployment, demonstrating how Europe is shaping the future of trusted, user-controlled digital identity ecosystems. Sessions including “Digital ID in Government”, “Digital ID in Finance”, “Digital Wallets”, “Seamless Payments”, and “KYC Authentication” will showcase leading use cases from around the world.
