A cooperative agreement has been announced between Japan and the European Union on the management of digital identity services, reaffirming their shared values and visions for digital transformation. The partners, who are aligned on many aspects of digital growth, will explore ways to ensure safety on digital platforms, with efficient yet simpler verification processes.

Both sides will welcome advanced ‘Data Free Flow with Trust’ on the basis of concrete projects and best practices coming from technological and legal fields building a recent agreement on cross-border data flows. Cooperation must translate to a common stance on interoperability with both sides willing to integrate common European and Japan data spaces.

They are also preparing a framework for a Public Support Transparency Mechanism which will enable “information exchange of public support provided by each side to the semiconductor sector”.

The essence of this strategic partnership is to enable online commerce to thrive by promoting compatibility on the underpinning frameworks and cybersecurity infrastructure.

The EU-Japan joint statement acknowledged the call in early 2024 to launch collaborative research concerning 6G.
