Whilst a Regula study has found biometrics currently ranks third in adoption, Emirates has invested in expediting its passenger check-in and boarding processes with 200 biometric camera systems installed.

As a security-first measure at the airport, the airline is facilitating an easier travel journey for its passengers from airport to their final destination. The high-tech biometric systems are located throughout Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport, seeing passengers pass immigration, boarding gates, lounges and boarding the aircraft without a hitch. Quick registration can be completed via the Emirates App in a few minutes.

The collaboration with the General Directorate of Identity and Foreign Affairs Dubai minimises the processing time significantly for all registered customers. Signing up for biometric registration once allows the customers to cut out queuing every time they travel and experience extremely accurate identification.

Customers must be 18 years or older to opt-in for biometric face matching, give consent to their data scanned from their passport and Emirates Skywards profile. Emirates will use biometric records from repeat visitors or Dubai residents, which will be compared against their GDRFAD profile, to complete future biometric matching.

There is no need for registered biometrics customers to reach for their boarding pass, as they can board faster with biometric facial recognition.

If the person does not yet have a GDRFAD profile, Emirates can create a temporary biometric profile to register consent for Emirates Biometrics.

H.E. Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai, said:

“At GDRFA Dubai, innovation has long been part of our DNA and a cornerstone of our services. Over the years, we have integrated artificial intelligence and biometric technologies to make travel through Dubai faster, safer, and more intuitive. Our partnership with Emirates continues this path of excellence, reflecting the spirit of collaboration that defines Dubai’s government and private sectors. Together, we are shaping a seamless travel experience that embodies reputation of the United Arab Emirates in general, and Dubai in particular, for efficiency, hospitality, and digital governance.”

With Emirates’s recent rollout of more than 200 biometric-cameras at Dubai International Airport enabling facial recognition from check-in to boarding, this year’s Identity Week Europe is a must-attend for the travel industry. The event will showcase sessions such as “Seamless Travel” and “Biometrics at the Borders”, directly addressing topics of biometrics, trust frameworks and the future of identity for travel.
