Hackers have targeted personal data belonging to thousands of customers at Qantas. As data breaches permeate through many industries, this is worryingly the largest scale attack in Australia for years, coming after Qantas suffering a reputational crisis.

The attack was “coordinated” compromising data such as names and email addresses, although the company reported hackers did not steal employee passwords, frequent flyer accounts and PIN numbers. Airlines such as Hawaiian Airlines and Canada’s WestJet have also managed reported breaches amid a rise in sophisticated engineering attacks. There is currently no evidence that the cyber group Scattered Spider behind this spate of attacks is responsible for the Qantas attack. The company has navigated negative publicity of late after sacking thousands of ground staff at the same time as receiving stimulus payments from the government.

They also controversially lobbied the government to refuse a bid by Qatar AIrways to expand their services.
