As a digitalised nation for over 20 years, Estonia’s two positions that all members states must issue an eID and enable electronic signatures that equal handwritten signatures influenced the eIDAS 2.0 Regulation.

These principles were defended in negotiations for the EU digital identity wallet, showing the country’s progressive stance on digital identity is still competitive today. The national identity application, Smart-ID appearing on the scene in Belgium in March suddenly diversified a hybrid market of applications for accessing digital services. Whilst Itsme was the forerunner to protect authentication for numerous digital services, the space is being shared with Smart-ID and myID.

SK ID Solutions is the parent company migrating the Smart-ID identification application to Belgium and will ensure full integration with digital platforms by the summer, as it hopes to partner with financial institutions, healthcare companies and other entities.

Citizens in five countries now leverage Smart-ID for authentication needs and to officialise documents with e-signatures or timestamps.
