Sonavation, a provider of ultrasound-based fingerprint technology, claims to have bonded its technology into a Gorilla Glass screen (the sort of screen used in the majority of high-end mobile phone and tablet screens).Although this isn't a new idea, such a design hasn't yet been commercialised, even though the technology would allow the positioning of a fingerprint sensor in any part of the device's screen. It would also remove the need to embed the technology in a traditional home button, which is an expensive process as it entails cutting a hole in the glass.According to the company, Corning Gorilla Glass is used on nearly four billion devices and used by more than 40 major brands worldwide. An embedded ultrasound biometric sensor would allow these smartphone or IoT devices to capture 3D fingerprint data – in other words taking measurements into the ridges and valleys of the fingerprint. According to the company, this provides a high level of identification and authentication security. Karl Weintz, Sonavation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented: “In today's world of digital integration into so many aspects of our lives, biometric security is now a critical necessity and a constantly evolving discipline. As the first known company to develop and successfully achieve 3D fingerprint directly bonded under 400 micron thick glass, we are making a revolutionary change and lasting mark on the industry.
