Israeli startup VocalZoom plans to improve speech-recognition applications, including voice biometric solutions, with laser technology.VocalZoom's founder say speech-recognition technologies that rely on microphones often aren't accurate enough due to factors like background noise.The company's solution uses a tiny, low-power laser that measures the vibrations of skin as people speak.Speaking to MIT Technology Review, VocalZoom founder and CEO Tal Bakish said sensors in a headset could measure the velocity of facial skin vibrations, while a regular audio signal would be captured by a microphone; software would then compare these two signals to come up with the best approximation of what users are trying to say.The company is targeting applications such as headsets and wearables, access control and smart homes and automotive control.
