At Identity Week Europe 2023, Renée Ong-De-Jong, Research and Development Advisor Travel Documents, Netherlands Ministry of the Interior, joined for a brief interview.

Renée divulged plenty of updates around the tougher security measures of travel documents, as we probed into the features on passports and effectiveness of machine-readable technology to detect morphing or image manipulation.

Mitigating fraud within the passport application process is also identified as a particular area of concern which should managed by ensuring biometrics are collected through life enrolment. Overall, Ong-De-Jong says awareness of identity theft to curtail counterfeiting is important: “You have to be sure the person making the application is the person on the document”.

Additionally, the questions acknowledge the contributions of the European Union’s iMARS project, focusing on research achievements in combating image manipulation attacks.

Renée Ong-De-Jong will be speaking again at Identity Week Europe 2024, in June, where she will participate in a panel discussing secure credentials, and alongside these field experts (below), have insight to share on issuing passports in line with ICAO standards, the adoption of DTC programmes and standards development, and updates to the MRZ.
