Arlington-based biometric forensics firm Ideal Innovations, Inc I3, has revealed that it recently completed a 10-day facial identification training course in support of the Romanian Government. Topics covered included background on the discipline of facial comparisons, skeletal and muscular structures of the head and face, role of dermatology and hair growth in facial comparisons, age progression, and comparison methodologies and techniques.Although already highly capable in digital forensics, the training allowed the students to increase their competency specifically in comparing facial images.One student commented “Elements of human face morphology were thoroughly presented and explained, as well as a complex comparison procedure for identification which will be efficiently used by the traineesߪߪ…The training materials – user manual and set of training images – was large enough and ensured the necessary support for teaching and individual study.”The training was developed and conducted by Lora Sims, who is Chairman of both the Facial Identification Scientific Working Group (FISWG) and the Facial Identification Subcommittee of the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC). The program reflects the latest thinking and procedures that will be incorporated into the forthcoming certification of face examiners by the International Association for Identification (IAI). Lora is a Senior Biometric Examiner at the US Department of Defense Forensic and Biometric Agency, an IAI Certified Tenprint Examiner, and a member of the Face Identification subcommittee of the IAI's Science & Practices Committee.
