Chinese facial recognition software startup Face++, which has been linked to Alibaba's mobile payments wing, has raised $25 million for its series B round of funding.Earlier this year, Alipay announced it would use the Face++ system developed by partner Megvii Inc, for payments, for a solution called “Smile to pay”.Speaking at the Cebit trade fair in Hanover in March, Alibaba chairman Jack Ma used the technology on a smartphone to buy a souvenir stamp from Alibaba's e-commerce site in China.Following a series A round of capital raised in November, this brings the company's total series B to $47 million.A Face++ representative told IT magazine TechCrunch that existing investors Qiming Venture Partners and Innovation Works returned for the round.According to a Bloomberg report in January, Megvii's app plans to use facial scans held in a Ministry of Public Security database drawn from legal identification files on about 1.3 billion Chinese.
